Mission and History

Our Mission: To inspire, educate and entertain through the energy and artistry of ballet.

Our Vision: Capturing the entertainment interest of all members of the family, Canada's Ballet Kelowna performs to sold out audiences.  Ballet Kelowna enhances the image of ballet, making the art form more inviting, fun and personally meaningful.  Proudly "made in Kelowna" this boutique "inno-classical" ballet company is a dedicated community partner.

Our Brand:  BE MOVED!

Our History: Ballet Kelowna was incorporated on November 7, 2002 as the Kelowna Ballet Society and received its Not-For-Profit Charity status on January 1, 2003. Under the leadership of Founding Board President Myles Bruckal, Founding Artistic Director David LaHay and Honorary Patrons Annette av Paul, Brian Macdonald, C.C. and Arnold Spohr, C.C., Ballet Kelowna gave its first performances with six professional Canadian dancers in the fall of 2003. The company now presents a mosaic of dance in two separate seasons each year as well as performing in The Nutcracker with The Canadian School of Ballet. Touring presently takes the company throughout British Columbia and Alberta, visiting more than 25 communities annually. Ballet Kelowna commissions new work from emerging and established Canadian choreographers and presents masterworks from the Canadian ballet legacy along with ballets and excerpts from the Classical and Romantic eras.

The founding of Ballet Kelowna continues the long-lasting ballet legacy of Gweneth Lloyd and Betty Farrally, co-founders of The Canadian School of Ballet (1938) and Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet (1939). The idea for starting a ballet company in Kelowna was initiated by then Canadian School of Ballet’s directors (1985-2011) Melville Brown and Lori Larson.  Ballet Kelowna shares rehearsal and office facilities with the school and its present directors Carley Bailey and Regeanna Stubel, giving dance students a wonderful opportunity to see first hand the day-to-day workings of a professional ballet company.
