Breaking Boundaries

"I am so very excited that my dancers are being challenged with the new movement vocabulary and choreographic energy being brought into the studio, and then onto the stage, by some of today’s most dynamic and innovative Canadian choreographers. From the transcendentally uplifting modern choreography of D. A. Hoskins’ The Lark Ascending to the physically and emotionally demanding movement of Shawn Hounsell’s north shore, Breaking Boundaries is what today’s dance is all about- finding new and relavent ways to explore universal themes."

Ballet Kelowna gears up for season

I dropped by the Ballet Kelowna studios [a couple of weeks ago] to check out what [was] happening. The dancers returned to work [in August] and spent the first week working with choreographer D.A. Hoskins, best remembered here in Kelowna for the poignantly beautiful Affairs of the Heart ballet he choreographed a few years back for our dancers. He also created a wonderful piece called The Lark Ascending and he was here [...] re-setting the piece on the dancers. It‘s going to be fabulous.
Last week and this week, choreographer Shawn Hounsell has been working the dancers. Hounsell was the choreographer who created Royal Winnipeg Ballet‘s show, Wonderland, which played here last year, so it [was] a thrill to have him here working with Ballet Kelowna‘s professionals.
In addition to his work with RWB, he‘s also created works for Les Ballet Jazz de Montreal, Les Grands Ballet Canadiens and recently premiered his new creation, sweet, as part of Ballet British Columbia‘s dance series in February.
Ballet Kelowna will open its fall tour Oct. 14 at the Kelowna Community Theatre – tickets are on sale now at Select Your Tickets. They will also perform again Oct. 21 in a special show collaborating with Okanagan Symphony Orchestra, called The Falcon‘s Trumpet, tickets at Ticketmaster.
It‘s promising to be a very exciting fall for dance fans!
