WORLD RENOWNED FIERY CUBAN DANCE COMES TO KELOWNA
(KELOWNA, BC) – When you think of Cuba, visions of Fidel Castro, Che Guevara, white sandy beaches, and the music of the Buena Vista Social Club spring to mind, but one of their greatest treasures is the National Ballet of Cuba. As part of their first ever Western Canada tour, the world renowned, National Ballet of Cuba will perform in Kelowna in a once in a lifetime experience. 36 members of this premiere international ballet company will perform The Magic of Dance, a collection of dances from world famous ballet repertoire. The Kelowna Community Theatre and Ballet Kelowna are thrilled to co-present such an astounding company and treating the Okanagan to a world class dance performance. National Ballet of Cuba has toured world wide and last year in the US to rave reviews with Lewis Segal from the Los Angeles Times raving about their performance as “Unforgettable!”
This national treasure was started in 1948 by the Cuban ballerina Alicia Alonso after a hugely successful career in the American Ballet Theatre when she returned to Cuba to found the company. In 1959 she was given the rare title of Prima Ballerina Assoluta a title given to only a handful of the word’s greatest ballerinas. Today at age 91 years old, she continues to direct the company.
Earning worldwide acclaim, The National Ballet of Cuba has performed in over sixty countries and received hundreds of international awards. The outstanding training and individual coaching the dancers receive from the devoted teachers at the famed Cuban ballet school have established the solid classical foundation that makes them the world-class dancers they are today. The combination of fiery Latin passion and Russian technique creates a unique dance experience. Cuban-trained dancers are now marquee names in top ballet companies throughout the world who often go on to become principal dancers with major ballet companies in the west.
National Ballet of Cuba will be performing at the Kelowna Community Theatre for two shows only – Saturday, February 11 at 7:30pm and Sunday, February 12 at 2:00pm.
