Performances

Ballet Kelowna launched its second decade with a ground-breaking program featuring Canadian choreographers and composers. From pioneering works to a cutting-edge jazz commission, Innovation challenged ideas of contemporary ballet.

The Kelowna Community Theatre was filled at the last show of the 2014 INNOVATION Tour on April 25 and though the dancers are now on break, Ballet Kelowna is not! Instead, we are  busy making final decisions about who will be chosen to replace Founding Artistic Director, David LaHay. His last day at the office on May 2nd included a luncheon, where he reminisced about the wonderful final performance and reception in his honour in the theatre lobby after the show.

Following intermission, the dancers surprised David with a number they had choreographed in his honour, set to Michael Bublé singing Save the Last Dance For Me. Each of the dancers took turns showing off what they do best, including Manuel Sorge’s soaring back-flips and Jed Duifhuis  dashing off stage to quickly don tap shoes and dance a lively routine across the front of the stage.

Immediately following the dancers, a surprise slideshow created by Ballet Kelowna’s long time photographer and board member, Glenna Turnbull, exhibited David’s legacy to the dance world. Click here to see and enjoy!

The combination of the dancers’ piece and the slideshow had David moved to tears and, as he took to the stage, the entire theatre of more than 600 people rose to their feet to honour him. It was truly one of those golden moments we hope he will cherish, remember how loved he is, how truly grateful we are for all he’s given us, and how very much he will be missed.

The show concluded with David LaHay’s final choreographic gift to the company as Artistic Director with his ballet called  Redux Continuum. Pianist/composer Neville Bowman, who composed the music for the ballet, played his work live, accompanied by jazz musicians Bernie Addington, Martin Lord and Craig Thomson: an extra bonus for the hometown Kelowna audience. It too earned a heartfelt and extended standing ovation.
