Ballet Kelowna presents its student performance Not Just Tutus and Tiaras, designed to mesmerize students of all ages. This carefully crafted one-hour performance, performed by Ballet Kelowna's dynamic and talented professional young dancers, introduces students to “a day in the life of a professional ballet dancer”. They get a glimpse of the rigors of daily class, learn about the rehearsal process and then see ballet excerpts showing the results of a the dancers' disciplined dedication to their art form. Each presentation ends with a question and answer period. Our company members are very articulate and enjoy sharing their experiences growing up to achieve their dreams to become professional dancers.
Artistic Director David LaHay is renowned for his ability to engage audiences of all ages and making the history and performance of ballet relevant to today’s students. He adjusts the school program to be appropriate for the ages of the students in attendance. For example, in the secondary schools, David LaHay will ask several young men to volunteer to come up on stage and experience what it is like to partner a ballerina and also introduce young ladies in the audience to the world of being partnered and lifted by the company's male dancers. These programs have been made possible in part by a grant from BMO and ArtStart in Schools.
